OPINION -- The National Assn. of REALTORS® showcased its very own REALTOR® turned Congressman, Dennis Cardoza, a California Blue Dog Democrat at the group's annual convention last week. Cardoza is co-sponsor of "Endangered Species Recovery Act," supported by NAR, legislation designed to significantly undermine the way science is used in the Endangered Species Act (ESA). The bill would allow political appointees to decide what constitutes the best available science and effectively eliminates the consideration of population modeling in all decisions about the listing and recovery of species. The bill also leaves the development of recovery plans to non-scientists, including development interests. These and other harmful provisions in the bill have the potential to cripple federal efforts to protect and preserve wildlife and their habitats.
Other supporters of the bill include: American Forest & Paper Assn., American Public Power Assn. Colorado River Energy, Edison Electric Institute, Mid-West Electric Consumers Assn., National Assn. of Home Builders, National Marine Mfrs. Assn., National Rural Electric Cooperative Assn., Tri-State Generation and Transmission Assn.--Frances Flynn Thorsen
